Syria warns of "surprise" retaliation to Israeli air strike

Source : Al Akhbar English

Damascus could take "a surprise decision to respond to the aggression of the Israeli warplanes," Syrian ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul- Karim Ali said a day after Israel struck against Syria.

"Syria is engaged in defending its sovereignty and its land," Ali told a website of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Syria said it complained to the United Nations, even though it is still technically at war with the Jewish state.

State news agency SANA said the foreign ministry's complaint evoked a 1974 disengagement agreement.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Iqbal Singha, commander of the UN Observer Disengagement Observer Force... and informed him of an official protest over the Israeli violation of the disengagement agreement of 1974," the ministry said.

Israel maintained a stony silence over Syria's claims, as well as over separate reports from security sources that its jets had struck a weapons convoy near the Lebanon border, despite a growing chorus of international condemnation.

Iranian deputy foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian warned of severe fallout.

Without elaborating, he said the "Zionist regime's attack on the outskirts of Damascus will have grave consequences," in remarks reported by the Isna news agency.

In the past, Iran has said that any Israeli attack on Syria would be considered an attack on the Islamic republic.

Hezbollah, Assad’s closest ally in Lebanon, said Wednesday's attack "fully unmasked what has been happening in Syria over the past two years and the criminal objectives of destroying this country and weakening its army."

Russia also condemned the attack, warning that any Israeli air strike against Syria would be "unacceptable."

"If this information is confirmed, then we are dealing with unprovoked strikes against targets located on the territory of a sovereign state, which brazenly infringes on the UN Charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motive used for its justification," said a ministry statement.

In Cairo, Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi condemned the "Israeli aggression," saying in a statement that it violated the territory of a sovereign Arab state.

"Israeli fighter jets violated our airspace at dawn today and carried out a direct strike on a scientific research center in charge of raising our level of resistance and self-defense," the general command said.

The warplanes entered Syria's airspace at low altitude and under the radar, the army said, adding that two site workers were killed.

On the political front, Syria's main opposition group was to meet Thursday in Cairo, a day after a surprise statement from its chief that he was willing to hold talks with regime officials, a Syrian National Coalition member said.

"This meeting was organized well before the Syrian National Coalition leader, Moaz al-Khatib, made his statement," SNC member Samir Nashar told AFP.

Khatib announced on Facebook on Wednesday that he was "ready for direct discussions with representatives of the Syrian regime in Cairo, Tunis or Istanbul."

He laid down as conditions the release of "160,000 detainees" and that the passports of exiled citizens be renewed in embassies abroad.

The United Nations says a total of more than 60,000 people have been killed in the country's 22-month...

International and Arab Condemnations of Israeli Aggression on Syria

APITALS, (SANA)- Russia expressed deep concern over the Israeli warplanes' violation of the Syrian airspace and shelling a scientific research center in Syria, describing this act as 'an unacceptable violation of the UN Charter".

"Moscow received with deep concern reports on an Israeli air raid against sites in Syria near Damascus," Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

"If these reports are true, then we are facing unjustified assaults on the territories of an independent and sovereign country, which constitutes a blatant violation of the UN Charter whatever the justifications," the statement added.

The Russian Foreign Ministry highlighted the need for taking "prompt measures to clarify the situation in all details," reiterating call for halting to all forms of violence in Syria and foreign interference in it and starting the Syrian national dialogue on the basis of Geneva Statement.

AL: Israeli Aggression on Syria a Violation against Sovereign Country

The Arab League (AL) condemned as "an outrageous aggression" the Israeli enemy's violation of the Syrian airspace and shelling a scientific research center in Jamraya area in Damascus Countryside on Wednesday, which killed and injured a number of citizens and caused huge damage in the site.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the AL General Secretariat denounced the Israeli aggression on Syria as "a blatant violation of the territories and sovereignty of an Arab country and a transgression against the UN charter, the international law rules, the international conventions and the Security Council's relevant resolutions."

The statement called on the international community to shoulder its responsibility for curbing the Israeli persistent aggressions against the Arab countries.

The statement stressed that the silence of the international community towards the Israeli shelling of sites in Syria in the past has encouraged it to commit its new aggression.

The AL General Secretariat called for holding Israel completely responsible for the outcomes of its aggression on Syria, stressing Syria's right to defend its territories and sovereignty.

It also affirmed the need for Israel to make amends for all the humanitarian and material losses caused by this aggression.

Lebanon Condemns Israeli Aggression as Flagrant

Lebanese Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Adnan Mansour, strongly condemned the Israeli aggression on the scientific research center in Jamraya, describing it as a "flagrant" act.

Mansour said in a statement the aggression indicates the reality of the approach Israel has adopted since 1948 till today "which constitutes a permanent threat to Arab peace and security".

"This demands that we the Arabs have a decisive stance to confront [this threat] with all legitimate means," Mansour added.

Israel increases demand for protective gas masks amid border tension

Source :   Xinhua

JERUSALEM, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli Postal Authority reported on Wednesday of a sharp increase in Israelis' demand for protective gas masks, amid the tension sparked over a possible leak of Syrian weapons to the hands of Lebanese Hezbollah militant group.

The Israeli Postal Authority, which is in charge of gas mask kits distribution, said that on Tuesday alone 4,000 kits were distributed.

"Every security incident contributes to an increase in the demand," Haim Mizaki, chief operation officer at the postal authority, told Army Radio.

According to him, the postal authority can supply up to 50,000 protective mask kits for Israeli citizens, while more than 4.5 million civilians (out of the total population of 7 million) have stocked up on kits so far.

Every Israeli citizen is entitled to a free kit from the state. Israelis first started massively piling up on these kits during the 1991 Gulf War, amid fears of Iraqi chemical weapons being launched to Israel.

Israel informed US of air strike on Syria

Source : Voice of Russia

Israel reportedly warned the US of a planned air strike on a Syrian target, the New York Times has cited an American official as saying Thursday.

On Wednesday, Israeli warplanes allegedly bombed a scientific research center near Damascus, killing two people and wounding several more. The building sustained considerable damage.

Foreign media quoted a number of sources who claimed the real target of the Israeli air strike to be a convoy of trucks bound for the Syria-Lebanon border. The convoy was allegedly carrying “game-changing weapons” for the Lebanese Hezbollah.

The weapons in question are purportedly Russia-made SA-17 rocket launchers. Other reports said the trucks were loaded with SS-N-26 anti-ship cruise missiles, or even Scud ballistic missiles.

The Syrian military denied that a convoy had been struck, claiming the military research facility had been overrun by opposition rebels.

Attack by Israeli air force on facilities in Syria is unacceptable - Russian Foreign Ministry

Moscow is checking information on an air strike by the Israeli Air Force on facilities in Syria and states that if such attacks continue that will be the violation of the UN Charter.

"Moscow is deeply concerned about the reports of an attack by Israel's Air Force on Syrian facilities near Damascus.

If this information proves true, then we deal with unsanctioned strikes on targets in the territory of a sovereign state, which is a blatant violation of the UN Charter and is unacceptable no matter what reasons are behind the attack," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on the ministry's official website on Thursday.

"We are taking urgent measures to clarify the situation in detail," the statement reads.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has again called to end "any violence in Syria, to prevent any external interference and to launch a pan- Syrian dialog on the basis of Geneva agreements dated June 30, 2012," it reads.

UN has no confirmation of Israel air strike on Syria

The United Nations Organization has no evidence of Israeli air strike against Syria, spokesman Eduardo Del Buey said.

He, however, admitted that UN peacekeepers headquartered in southern Lebanon noticed that Israeli air forces were on a heightened regime of alert.

On Wednesday Syria`s official media said that Israeli jets had carried out a direct strike on a scientific research centre outside Damascus, killing 2 people and injuring 5 more.

Zionist Jets Strike Convoy near Lebanon Border

Source : http://www.almanar.com.lb

Zionist military forces carried out an air strike overnight on a weapons convoy from Syria near the Lebanese border, security sources told Agence France Presse on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The Israeli air force blew up a convoy which had just crossed the border from Syria into Lebanon," one source said, without giving a precise location for the attack.

A second security source, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, also confirmed to AFP that Israeli warplanes had hit a convoy allegedly carrying weapons to Lebanon but said the incident occurred just inside Syria.

A Zionist military spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

The National News Agency later on Wednesday denied that a Zionist air strike had taken place.

The Associated Press quoted U.S. and regional officials as saying that Zionist jets conducted an airstrike inside Syria overnight near the border with Lebanon, hitting a convoy of trucks.

A U.S. official said the strike hit a convoy of trucks. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the strike.

The attack came after the Zionist entity expressed concerns that Damascus's stockpile of chemical weapons could fall into the hands of Lebanon's Resistance - Hezbollah, or other militant organizations.

Ahead of the strike, both sources reported a high level of "unusual" Zionist activity over Lebanese airspace, beginning on Tuesday evening and continuing overnight.

The attack took place just days after the entity of occupation moved two batteries of its vaunted Iron Dome missile defense system to the north city of Haifa, which was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire in the 2006 war.

Earlier the Lebanese military, said twelve Zionist warplanes violated Lebanese airspace in less than 24 hours, flying low in several sorties over villages in southern Lebanon.

A Lebanese security official said there has been increased Zionist activity over Lebanese airspace in the past week.

A Lebanese army communiqué said the last of the sorties took place at 2:00 am local time Wednesday. It said four warplanes which flew in over the southernmost coastal town of Naqoura hovered for several hours over villages in south Lebanon before leaving Lebanese airspace.

It said similar flights by eight other warplanes were conducted Tuesday.

The Lebanese official said the flights were part of "increased activity" in the past week but did not elaborate further. The area of Lebanon where the flights took place borders southern Syria.

Zionist enemy’s violations of Lebanese airspace are not uncommon and Lebanese authorities routinely lodge complaints at the U.N. against the flights.

Report: Convoy Israel Struck Carried SA-17 Rockets

Source :  ‘‘Israel National News‘‘

The arms convoy that Israel reportedly attacked last night along the Syria-Lebanon border carried SA-17 missiles, among other things, according to foreign sources. The SA-17 is a Russian-made anti- aircraft missile. The sources said that the shipment was intended for Hizbullah and that, had they made it into the organization's hands, the strategic balance of power in the region would have been altered. Israel has not responded thus far to reports in the foreign press, according to which the IAF carried out the attack on the convoy. According to some reports, the weapons convoy was attacked shortly after it crossed the border from Syria into Lebanon. Another source reported that the attack took place when the convoy was still inside Syrian territory. The Lebanese Army said earlier that Israel fighter jets penetrated the Lebanese airspace Tuesday afternoon and continued to circle in its skies until 2:00 AM
