UNIFIL urges Israel to withdraw from northern Ghajar of Lebanon

Source : Xinhua

BEIRUT, April 30 (Xinhua) -- The UN Interim Force in Lebanon ( UNIFIL) stressed Tuesday that Israel should withdraw from the Lebanese side of the border village of Ghajar.

Israel's occupation of the northern part of the village is a clear violation against the UN resolution 1701, the UNIFIL said in a statement, noting that Israel should withdraw its forces from the area.

According to the statement, the UNIFIL recently rejected Israel 's intention to build a fence around the village.

The UNIFIL will work closely with the Lebanese army to enforce the UN resolution and prevent any violations by Israel, the statement added.

The UNIFIL has proposed to protect the Lebanese side of Ghajar after the withdrawal of the Israeli army. While Lebanon has approved the plan, Israel continues to procrastinate on its decision on it.

Israel occupied the northern part of the village during the 2006 war.

Iran: Chemical arms use in Syria a 'red line'

Source : http://www.globalpost.com

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi got in on the Syria's "red line" rhetoric on Tuesday.

Salehi said the use of chemical weapons by anyone in Syria marks Iran's red line, though the minister did not say what actions (if any) his country would take if a poison gas attack were confirmed.

"We have always emphasized that the use of chemical weapons on the part of anyone is our red line," Reuters quoted Salehi saying via the ISNA news agency.

"Iran is opposed to the use of any kind of weapon of mass destruction, and not just their use but their production, accumulation, and use," Salehi added.

More from GlobalPost: Israel says it's not pushing for intervention in Syria, despite chemical weapons

Salehi then backed the claim by President Bashar al-Assad's regime - Iran's political and military ally - that rebels had used chemical weapons.

"On Syria," he said, "we have also requested that in accordance with the Syrian government, which emphasizes that the opposition has used these weapons, the United Nations...identify the main culprit in this regard, which is the opposition."

Last week, the White House said they believed with "varying degrees of confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically the chemical agent sarin." Bashar's government rejected the assertion, saying Western accusations "do not have any credibility."

Also Tuesday, UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon called on the Syrian government to allow its investigators access to alleged areas of chemical arms use.

“A credible and comprehensive inquiry requires full access to the sites where chemical weapons are alleged to have been used. I again urge the Syrian authorities to allow the investigation to proceed without delay and without any conditions,” Ban told reporters.

“This is a crucial moment in our efforts to get the team on the ground to carry out its important task,” he added.

Mansour: Hezbollah Fighters Deployed in Border Towns to Defend Lebanese

Source : islamicinvitationturkey.com

Lebanese care-taker Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour stressed on Friday that the Lebanese government hasn’t breached the policy of ‘self-distancing’ it adopted since the unrest erupted in Syria two years ago, indicating that Hezbollah fighters are deployed in the northern border area to defend the Lebanese citizens residing there.

“Hezbollah declared that its fighters exist in Lebanese towns to defend the Lebanese citizens and not to participate in military operations inside Syria,” Mansour told Al- Manar TV presenter.

“There is a wide propaganda campaign claiming that Hezbollah participates in conflicts of Deir al-Zoor, Aleppo, Homs, etc., but this is not true,” he added.

“Throughout the two years, we were saying that the solution in Syria should be political and not military. Whom who thinks that military option is the solution that can lead to positive results is totally wrong,” the Lebanese care-taker minister stated.

Syria was hit by a violent unrest since Mid-March 2011, where Syrian government believes it is orchestrated by may Western and Arab countries, including Qatar and Turkey.

"Hezbollah denies that it has sent any surveillance plane towards the occupied Palestinian land," a statement by the Iranian-backed armed Muslim Shi'ite group said.

Asked whether Hezbollah, which sent a drone into southern Israel in October, was behind the incident, an Israeli military spokesman said an investigation was under way.

Israeli PM says Lebanon drone incident 'extremely grave'

An unmanned drone from Lebanon shot down on Thursday by the air force off the northern coast of Israel was an "extremely grave" incident, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

"I see this attempt to breach our borders as extremely grave. We will continue to do whatever we must to protect the security of Israel's citizens," he said.

Israeli air force has shot down Hezbollah drone over Israeli skies - military officials

The Israeli military says it has shot down an unmanned aircraft sent by the Hezbollah group into Israeli skies.

"An unmanned aircraft (UAV) was identified approaching the coast of Israel and was successfully intercepted by IAF aircraft five nautical miles off the coast of Haifa at approximately 14:00 (1300 GMT) today," it said.

"We're talking about another attempt by Hezbollah to send an unmanned drone into Israeli territory," said deputy defence minister Danny Danonhe.

It is the second known instance in which the Lebanese militant group, a bitter Israeli enemy, has sent a drone into Israeli airspace. Last October, the Israeli air force shot down an unmanned aircraft in a similar incident.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in 2006 that ended in a stalemate.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently warned that Hezbollah might try to take advantage of the instability in neighboring Syria to obtain what he calls game- changing weapons.

Kidnappers release Lebanese man held in Syria

Source  :  Al Akhbar English

A Lebanese man kidnapped in the border area with Syria was freed on Saturday, prompting the release of 11 other people who had been held in a string of retaliatory kidnaps.

Hussein Kamel Jaafar, a Shia resident of an area near the northern Lebanese town of Arsal, was kidnapped last month and reportedly taken into Syria.

In response, members of his family took captive several local Sunnis, whose families also carried out retaliatory kidnappings.

"A delegation of Arsal residents returned from Syria at dawn this morning after receiving Hussein Kamel Jaafar," a security source told AFP.

"They paid a ransom of $150,000 to secure Jaafar's release," the source said.

Local television showed footage of Jaafar arriving in Arsal in the early hours of Saturday, and being received by officials.

"I was kidnapped by bandits and thieves, not the Free Syrian Army," Jaafar told LBC news, adding that his captors "beat me and tortured me."

In a statement, the Lebanese military confirmed the release of Jaafar and 11 other men who had been abducted in recent weeks, both Sunni and Shia.

After Jaafar's kidnap, armed members of his family from Hermel and Baalbeck kidnapped several Sunni residents of Arsal, security sources said, prompting additional counter-kidnaps of Shia Lebanese.

UN worried over the presence of Syrian troops and rebel forces in Golan Heights

The UN Security Council has expressed concern over the presence of Syrian troops and armed opposition supporters in the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights.

The council agreed with Russia’s Permanent Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin that it poses danger to the UN staff in the area. In early March, Syrian opposition militants captured more than 20 UN servicemen in the Golan Heights. The Security Council urged both sides to respect the safety and freedom of movement of the peacekeepers.

UN concerned about its peacekeepers’ safety at Golan Heights

The United Nations has grown concerned about the safety of its peacekeepers at the Golan Heights after one UN checkpoint came under fire over the weekend.

According to the UN official, Martin Nesirsky, none of the UN staff members in charge of the disengagement of forces at the Golan Heights has been reported injured.

According to the diplomat, the peacekeepers have already stopped patrolling the area during nighttime. Israel and Cyprus to Hold Joint Military Exercise

Via  :  StratRisks

Israel is set to send warships to the eastern Mediterranean for a joint military exercise with Cyprus, according to a report which appeared in the Cypriot Fileleftheros daily on Tuesday and which was cited by the Turkish Today’s Zaman.

Cypriot Defense Minister Fotis Fotiou confirmed that the joint exercise, which will include the participation of four or five Israeli warships, is due to start on April 25, the report said.

Fotiou also noted that the exercise will focus on the security of the eastern Mediterranean region and that of gas companies.

Turkey, which does not recognize Greek Cyprus as a sovereign country, strongly objects to natural gas exploration being conducted by Cyprus in the Mediterranean, noted Today’s Zaman.

However, noted the Turkish daily, in an unexpected announcement at a meeting on Monday, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yıldız said that Turkey now considers it possible to cooperate with Cyprus and Israel in joint energy projects in the Mediterranean “so long as the political atmosphere allows it.”

Two years ago, Israel began exploratory drilling in Block 12 of the Tamar natural gas field, which extends into Cypriot territorial waters. This prompted strong protests from Turkey, causing the Turkish northern half of Cyprus to mark its marine borders with Turkey and issue licenses for offshore oil and gas drilling.

Cyprus and Israel have gotten closer in the last several years, as Israel has made an effort to tighten its ties with both Cyprus and Greece, particularly in light of the long-time row between the Jewish state and Turkey.

IOF to demolish 8 houses in the Northern Jordan Valley

Source  :  http://www.palestine-info

NABLUS, (PIC)-- Israeli occupation forces notified on Tuesday afternoon 8 citizens from Ain al-Hilweh in Wadi al-Maleh in the Northern Jordan Valley to evacuate the region, claiming it is a military zone where construction is prohibited.

Aref Daraghmeh, head of Wadi al-Maleh village council, said in a press statement that the occupation authorities ordered the families who live in tin huts in the village to leave before the next month.

He added that these notifications come in the context of the continuous Israeli attempts to evacuate the region from its inhabitants.

Ali Daraghmeh, a resident in Ain al-Hilweh, stressed that these military decisions had a negative impact on the residents of the area whose number began to decrease as a result of the practices of the IOF soldiers and settlers in the region.

The IOF turned 70% of Wadi al-Maleh's lands to military training areas and areas planted with landmines.

US Navy Deploys Laser Weapon near Iran

Source  :  http://www.almanar.com

The US Navy announced on Monday it is going to sea for the first time with a laser attack weapon that has been shown in tests to disable patrol boats and blind or destroy surveillance drones.

The prototype Navy Laser Weapons System (LaWS) is being fitted to the USS Ponce, an amphibious transport and docking ship that is due to become operational this year and take up station off Iran during 2014.

The Navy released video and still images of the laser weapon burning through a drone during a test firing.

Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan Greenert said the LaWS was able to take out targets at a tiny fraction of the cost of other weapons.

A nonpartisan study for Congress found that the new high-energy laser “could provide Navy surface ships with a more cost-effective means of countering certain surface, air and ballistic missile targets.”

But Navy officials acknowledge that the first prototype weapon to be deployed is not powerful enough to take on jet fighters or missiles on their approach.

Israel deploys rocket interceptor amid tensions on southern territories

Source  :  Xinhua

JERUSALEM, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli military deployed an Iron Dome missile defense battery to the Red Sea port city of Eilat on Wednesday night amid rising tensions on Israel's southern front with the Gaza Strip, local media reported Thursday.

The battery, which became fully operational earlier on Wednesday, is considered the fifth in the air force's arsenal.

The deployment in Eilat, a popular desert resort twice attacked by rockets fired from the Egyptian-controlled Sinai last year, came amid rising tensions on Israel's southern front with the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank.

Rockets fired by Gaza militants entered its third day Thursday when militants fired a projectile that fell in an open area in Israel. No injuries or damage were reported in the attack. The rockets fired from Gaza prompted Israeli army to launch retaliatory air strikes on targets in northern Gaza's Beit Lahia for the first time since an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire in November last year.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army on Thursday ratcheted up alertness in the West Bank, where thousands of Palestinians were due to partake in the funeral of Maysara Abu Hamdeya, 64, who was serving a life sentence in an Israeli prison and died of cancer Tuesday.

On Wednesday night, Israeli troops shot dead two Palestinian youths who hurled petrol bombs at their position during a scuffle that broke out near the city of Tulkarm.

Syrian helicopter bombs house near Lebanese border

Source  :  Xinhua

DAMASCUS, April 3 (Xinhua) -- A Syrian helicopter gunship on Wednesday fired a rocket against a house in Arsal village on the Lebanese-Syrian border, Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said, reporting no casualties.

The agency said the rocket hit the house of al-Awad family in Arsal but caused only material losses. The report gave no further details and could not be confirmed by any Syrian sources.

The village of Arsal, located on Lebanese northeastern border, has emerged as a conduit for arms trafficking and a stronghold for rebels who enter Syria to join the fight against the government troops.

Last month, Syrian foreign ministry stressed that the army was showing "the highest level of self- restraint" in refraining from striking the rebels' positions in the border areas on the Lebanese side.

Israel, Syrians, trade fire across ceasefire line

Via  :  StratRisks

AFP - An Israeli tank fired into Syrian territory on Tuesday night after Syrian mortar and small- arms fire hit the Israeli-occupied sector of the Golan heights the military said.

An Israeli army statement said troops “returned precise fire at the source and reported a direct hit.”

In response to a query from AFP a spokeswoman said it was an Israeli tank that returned fire. She did not give further details.

There were no Israeli casualties from the Syrian fire, the army said.

A spokeswoman said the incidents were reported to UN ceasefire monitors in the area.

Last week Israeli troops on the strategic plateau fired an Israeli-made Tamuz anti-tank missile at a Syrian army post after coming under fire twice in 12 hours.

It was not clear in any of the cases whether the shooting was from the Syrian army or from rebel forces in the area.

Last November, gunfire from Syria prompted troops to respond with artillery in the first instance of Israeli fire at the Syrian military since the 1973 Middle East war.

Israel is closely monitoring its border with Syria amid fears jihadist elements from among the rebels fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad might attempt to attack the Jewish state.

Earlier on Tuesday, Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon repeated a warning to respond to every instance of fire from the Syrian-held side.

“Whether it’s aimed at our territory or not we respond to silence the source of fire, as happened last week,” he told reporters during a visit to the Golan.

Yaalon went on to reiterate Israel concerns that Syrian government stocks of chemical or other weapons which could pose a threat to the Jewish state might fall into the hands of militant jihadis among the rebels.

“We have acted and will act in order not to all such weapons to reach irresponsible groups,” he said.

Israel seized the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it in 1981, in a move never recognised by the international community.

Since 1974, the UN’s Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has been monitoring the Syrian side of the armistice line with a force of 1,200 troops, although its number has recently dropped to 1,000.

“Hezbollah Will Shake Ground If a War Breaks Out”

Source  :

Head of Technological and Logistics Directorate in the Zionist Army, Major General Kobi Barak, stated on Monday that “the ground will shake in Israel by Hezbollah’s missiles if a war breaks out on the Lebanese front.”

Speaking before recruitments in Tze’elim military base, Barak called upon new Zionist soldiers to be more linked to reality in what is related to the upcoming war with Hezbollah, according to the Hebrew news website Walla.

He indicated that “any improper field deployment will cause casualties within the Israeli army’s ranks. This requires us to get prepared and deploy in a better way; otherwise, we will receive severe blows.”

“Our future officers should realize in advance that a real war will begin on the home front; as the security agency reports that 1,200 missiles will fall daily on Israel if a confrontation with Hezbollah breaks out,” Barak added

General Barak further pointed out that the Lebanese field is the most vulnerable to explosion: “This requires us to be prepared for attempts by Hezbollah to diminish the army’s ability to move and drill,” he said, adding that “the first day of the coming war will witness the firing of accurate heavy artillery barrages.

“In the first day of the next war, heavy barrages of rockets will be launched against the main army centers primarily located in the military assembly areas, emergency stores and supply and logistics bases,” he added.

According to the website reporter for Military Affairs, Amir Bouchbot, officials in the Division of Technology and Logistics estimate that «everything on the map will be targeted by Hezbollah. On this basis, the goal of the exercises is to enable military forces from the quick exit of bases, reduce casualties within ranks and reduce the possibility of targeting stores and depots of ammunition and military equipment.

The sources added that the Logistics Division finally carried out various activities in preparation for the next war, including unannounced war scenarios, noting that “preparations ranging from food supplies for troops in the early hours of the war to the mental preparation of leaders.”

However, they warned that “military support troops will be exposed rom the first moment of the battle, including their heading to stores to receive military equipment, and during engagement with the enemy on its territory.

Moreover, “The Guardian” British daily reported that the Iron Dome anti-short range-missile system will not be allocated for protecting cities and residential buildings in event of a war with Hezbollah, but only to protect a number of sensitive military sites, such as Air Force airports, in addition to a number of otherof strategic locations, such as power and electricity plant

Iron Dome Cannot Protect Civilians: Zionist Commander

Source  :  http://www.almanar.com

Zionist anti-missile system cannot fully protect civilians from rocket attacks during a war, as it was installed primarily to defend strategic military sites, the Zionist ‘Home Front commander’ has admitted amidst growing criticism of the system, RT website reported.

“There are five Iron Dome units currently operating in Israel, which is not enough to protect Israel from rocket fire by Lebanon’s Hezbolla,” Home Front Command head Major General Eyal Eisenberg told Haaretz in an interview.

The Iron Dome is a US-funded anti-missile system developed to destroy short- range rockets and artillery shells.

“For Israel to be able to fully protect its civilian population, it would need at least 10 working Iron Dome batteries in targeted regions, which it will not be able to acquire for at least another two years,” he added.

“But it has to be remembered that the anti-missile batteries only protect specified zones, mainly in the big cities… Self-defense instructions are issued to civilians as though there were no such defense systems,” Eisenberg said.

The buzz surrounding the system’s successes inside the occupied territories prompted US President Barack Obama to make his first stop during his March visit to the entity at an Iron Dome installation.

However, the achievements of the Iron Dome have given Zionist civilians a false sense of security, Eisenberg argued: “Because of Iron Dome, the civilian population perceived the confrontation as being less intensive than it actually was.”

There has also been growing criticism over how successful the system has been at intercepting “enemy missiles,” with US and Zionist security experts arguing that Iron Dome would fail to protect the entity of occupation from more serious attacks

"There are many question marks about Iron Dome now. The system may be good psychologically because it makes Israelis feel safer. But it makes no difference in saving lives,” military analyst and former Zionist fighter pilot Reuven Pedatzur told the National.

Pedatzur argued that the development of Iron Dome was a "mistake," both strategically and cost-wise, as intercepting one enemy rocket with the system costs at least $50,000. The Zionist Iron Dome interceptions during Operation Pillar of Defense cost $25 to $30 million, according to a statement of the Jewish government.

Despite the debate around the Iron Dome, the US has helped finance the system by contributing an initial $275 million, and recently pledged an additional $680 million for deployments through 2015, with Congress calling the system “very effective.”

The New York Times reported that weapons experts who analyzed online videos of Iron Dome’s hits and misses from November suggested that its interception rate was actually no higher than 30 to 40 percent.

Eisenberg also expressed concern that the enemies of the Jewish entity may possess more advanced weapons. “The threat is changing before our eyes. In the next war, for the first time, we might have more civilians killed on the home front than soldiers on the combat front,” he said.

Hezbollah reportedly possesses 5,000 warheads – if it launched a full-scale attack, the entire Tel Aviv metropolitan area would be under massive bombardment, Eisenberg added.
