BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Mortar shells fired from Syria landed in the occupied Golan Heights on Saturday, Israel's army said.
"Several shells landed in the southern Golan Heights, most likely due to the fighting inside Syria," an Israeli military spokeswoman said.
"No injuries or damages were caused and the incident has been reported to UN forces."
Stray gunfire between the forces of President Bashar Assad and insurgents has strayed across the Golan border several times over the last year.
Israeli soldiers shot across the ceasefire line in February, wounding a ma who approached the boundary fence.
In November, Israeli troops fired artillery shells into Syria in response to number of incidents in which mortar shells and bullets hit Israeli militar and civil installations on the Golan Heights.
The UN has a peacekeeping force in the area monitoring a ceasefire in plac since the 1970s. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 196 war and later annexed it in a move never recognized internationally.
Technically, Syria and Israel are still at war, but the Golan, a strateg plateau, has been largely quiet for decades.
